Blog #49 - False Intellectualism

Sadly, many university graduates are far from intelligent but they have been convinced otherwise.

If I were to go to university and spend four years learning a particular subject, I'd be rewarded at the end with a degree and a ceremony. I could then go out into the world with a certificate from the 'keepers of intellect' saying I was a proud member. The right to say "I have a degree" is a valuable right that most are very proud of and they should be. It really is a great accomplishment... usually.

It used to be the case that you had to be among the intellectual elite to be able to accomplish such a feat, especially from one of the higher ranking colleges and universities but lately, things seem to be shifting.

With the increase of ideology in the classroom and the push for "diversity, equity and inclusion" there are many more factors that contribute to ones ability to be accepted to an elite school.

Once accepted, many students admit to using A.I. for most of their work and because of the endless options for seemingly useless degrees, it seems that there is a huge difference between the value of different degrees however, if someone were to tell you that they have a degree from Yale, you'd make some fairly large assumptions about that person. There is a level of prestige possessed by these individuals, even before you find out the subject of the degree.

In the past it was a safe bet to assume a few things about a Yale degree holder but in modern days, there are degrees that are effectively useless.

The problem is, this person has now been trained by the system to assume that they are a part of the intellectual elite. Sadly, many university graduates are far from intelligent but they have been convinced otherwise. They also, often don't understand that knowledge doesn't equal wisdom.

We now have a large portion of young adults thinking they know better, and that they are intellectually superior. They're also not wise enough to listen to wisdom and our society is suffering because of it.

It's not just post secondary education that is adding to this problem. Social media has given a platform and an audience to many who really have no business in the public eye. It's tough to blame them. They're often making large amounts of money doing something that doesn't require them to answer to a boss. It also allows them to be someone that they wouldn't be if they had to answer to their peers.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says...

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

God tells us to trust in him. Not only because He is worthy of our trust but also because the world is not. That includes people.

The world is a very dark and complicated place. It is so easy to get lost, especially these days with all of the contradictory information. The deeply intellectual are a gift from God, especially the ones who are humble enough to have accepted Christ (a much more difficult thing for deeply intellectual people), but no matter how great their incites are, comparing to the source of all wisdom (the Bible), is vital to keep ourselves on the right path.

About Me

Music is my life, but in order to have something worth writing about, it could be argued that you must first live a big life.

I'd like to think I've lived the best I could in my forty two years. I'd also like to believe I've absorbed a little wisdom along the way. On the other hand, I could be completely wrong.

Either way I thought I would write down some ideas and maybe they'd find an eye or two and spark some conversation.

The topics are not based only on music but have had influence on my songwriting to one degree or another.

I hope you enjoy

Sincerely

Justin
